Olympic Flapbook is DONE!
So, we've been done with it for about a week now. Just hadn't taken the pics yet, and posted about it. Maybe once I get a pic, I'll edit and add it. I'm just glad it's done! Rachel really enjoyed making it, and liked learning about the Olympics.

It's one of those days that I'm glad we don't send Rachel to school!
I remember last year when I'd send Rachel off, and it would be raining in the morning. . . . I hated those days! (Not to mention the cold days too!) Well, this morning is one of those days where it's raining pretty good. We saw the other kids out the window standing at the bus stop in the rain. I'm sitting there thinking, "I'm soooo glad we're not out there right now!" I like rainy days, just don't want to be OUT in it. I like to be inside with no where to go, listening to the rain on the windows and watching it come down as we do our homework. I like the dark, cozy feeling a rainy day brings with it. I like the big downpours, which is what we're getting today, and watching it come. Been getting some thunder and lightning too!
I also don't miss the rushing in the morning to get her ready, missing the bus because some days it came earlier than it was supposed to so I'd have to drive her (wasting my time and gas), and making a lunch when I'm trying to make breakfast too. Now I can get my shower and get ready for the day BEFORE 8 am! No more waiting for Rachel to be out the door to do that. If I need to sleep in, I CAN! If Rachel needs a little more rest, she CAN as well. No more whining when I wake her up at 7:30, "I'm too tired! I hate school, I want to homeschool. Please, take me out." No more having to get homework done in the evenings (which is the worst time for me). We can do work in the evenings if we feel like it, or we don't have to. No more following someone else's schedule! We pick our own school days, and which days are vacation. No more whiny Rachel in the evenings because she didn't get her afternoon rest. Life is much more pleasant and peaceful now all around.
I'm so glad for the option to homeschool my kids. This is living the life! I love being able to teach them and being there every time they learn something new, and being able to share in that experience with them. Rachel is also no longer being held back at the pace of other kids, she can go at HER pace. I love that this way of schooling, she has more time to learn the extra things like helping me cook or learning to sew or learning to help clean. (She cleaned a toilet Monday afternoon. . .and did a GREAT job!) We seemed to never have any extra time for those things when she was in school. All those necessary things to learn and know how to do someday when she's on her own.

First couple days
Yesterday and today went really well. :) Rachel likes her new English curriculum, but thinks the new Reading is "too long." I think it's good for her though, and not as long as she thinks it is. If she motivated herself enough to just sit down and get it done, it wouldn't seem as long. I like it for it's new vocab words, reading selections from Bible stories, comprehension, and phonics. All her other subjects, like I've mentioned before, are the same ol' that she's been doing. We recently skipped 3 lessons in Alpha! We started the subtraction unit in there, and she's already been doing subtraction in A beka. . .so I figured the first few lessons would be TOO easy. Sure enough, I gave her all three tests for the first three subtraction lessons without actually going through the lessons, and she got 100% on all of them. . .so we moved on! I don't want to waste time teaching something she already knows and is good at.
Same with Michaela. . . same workbooks she's been working out of. Although, in September, Michaela will begin some new books as well. Those include, the Skill Sharpeners workbooks for reading and math in preschool level; and Rod and Staff's preschool series. We've started tracing letters and numbers. . .learning how to write them. She's doing much better than she was doing in the spring where she wouldn't trace it properly, if at all. Still have lots of room for improvement and learning in writing, but she's improved tremendously in the past few months, and I'm happy with her progress. Her left handed scissors came in the mail a few weeks ago, so she's been learning how to cut and paste as well. Coloring frustrates her. . . you'd think she'd love to color with being left handed and all. . .aren't lefty's supposed to be artsy? lol She loves to draw free handed, just hates coloring in a picture. I think her frustration comes in when she can't stay in the lines since her fine motor skills aren't sharp enough for that yet.
Brandon gave them their blessings on Sunday night, and mine on Monday morning.
A couple first day pics. I'm putting up two since one of them, Rachel looks better, and the other Kayla looks better:

It's the last week of 2007-2008 school year!
Next Monday begins our 2008-2009 year officially. In the future, this week will be a "week off" week, but I've been trying to get Rachel caught up with some things, so we've been plugging along. Some of the subjects we've been working on will carry over into the coming weeks, and some curriculum will be new. We have one more unit in science in the Human Body book, and we'll be done! So, we'll probably finish that the week of August 18th sometime. I think our next science studies will be Animals/Animal Kingdoms. I'm amazed at how much Rachel has absorbed and retained in her science knowledge! A lot of stuff we went over was probably "above her age level." But, I taught it to her anyway, not expecting her to remember everything, just what she's able, and she can remember quite a bit about the human body and the body systems (except reproduction system, which isn't in the book).
In math, we're working out of MUS-Alpha and A beka 1. By the end of this week we'll be done with the addition unit, and ready to start with the subtraction unit in lesson 18 next week. (There's 30 lessons total, so we're getting closer to the end!) I suspect subtraction will be a breeze since she is already familiar with it. In her A beka workbook, we're getting close to half way through. Most of it is really too easy for her, but I want her to go through it anyway to get the extra practice with the easier stuff and master it more, and also so she gets to do all the money, measurement, clock, etc problems. That's the main reason why I added A beka math to her MUS. . .for the stuff A beka covers that MUS doesn't cover till later, but I still want her to learn now. They both offer something the other doesn't, so working out of both seems to be working for us. Around January or so, I'm projecting that she'll be into MUS-Beta and A beka 2. Once the math gets tougher, we'll slow it down a bit more and really focus on it, but for now, she's doing good retaining it all at this pace. And, I'm wanting to catch her up some so all her subjects are on the same grade level eventually. If she didn't have the ability, I wouldn't help her get there, and just leave her split between two grades. But, she's able to speed a little faster through the math and grasp all the concepts so far, so we're getting evened up while it's "easy!"
Some new curriculum will be English and Reading. I got the Rod and Staff English 2 and Reading 2 that we'll start next week. I'm putting her into 2nd grade for those since her reading is at that level, probably above; and she's been flying through her grade 1 English workbook this summer and most of it was stuff she already knew, or got quickly, so we'll go right into English 2. (Of course, this is the child that could form a few sentences at 10 months old, so it shouldn't surprise me that language comes easy to her!)
For social studies, I have a few ideas, but don't have it totally figured out yet. The history books I had planned to use for a few years now have proven to have some Christian/religious inaccuracies, so I'm trying to figure out what to do instead. We'll definitely be doing more flapbooks, I'll probably do some history through living books and then have her add a page to her 'Book of the Centuries' each time we study a new event in history, and then some map learning and geography.
Whew! I think that's it! Rachel was disappointed that today we didn't work on the Olympic flapbook since we did science instead. I told her she has to get her morning work done faster then if we're going to have time to do both science and flapbook on days I have science planned. We'll see if that motivates her any to move faster! lol

Olympic Flapbook
So, last Thursday Rachel and I started working on her first flapbook! (also called lapbook, we prefer to use 'flapbook' because that word makes more sense for what it is) I found the idea on a message board, and thought it would be fun to do. :) Once it's done, I'll have to take pictures of it and post. It'll show our studies of the Olympics and China. We worked on it Thursday and Friday for Social Studies and Rachel is just loving this activity!

Homeschool Tracker
On a homeschool message board, I was reading some people talking about a "Homeschool Tracker" you can get. So, I googled it, and was checking it out. They have a free basic version, and a Plus version for $49. I downloaded the free version and I'm trying it out. It's really cool! You can put in the start/stop of the school year, keep track of attendance, grades, assignments, hours spent per subject each day, field trips, etc. I'm really excited about it! I spent quite some time getting all our planning done on there! Now, it's pretty much ready to go.
Two more weeks left for this year! We do year round with breaks throughout the year, plus I was trying to get Rachel up to speed on stuff I thought she should have learned last year while in ps, but didn't learn. . . . Our new year will begin on August 11. Rachel will be in 1st/2nd at the beginning, and a pretty much solid 2nd by January this year. Michaela will be doing pre-school. Alyssa is going to be learning motor skills, playing and how to talk. . .lol. We'll be taking days off for my birthday, Labor Day, two weeks off from Sept 22 - Oct 3; and the weeks of Halloween and Thanksgiving; then 3 weeks around Christmas. So, that's our schedule for the next few months till Christmas anyway. We like to take most of our time off during the fall and spring, and not as much time off in the winter and summer since it's too cold/hot to go outside. If you're gonna take time off, might as well be when it's nice enough to enjoy the great outdoors, right!? January, February and March will pretty much be putting our noses to the grindstone! There will be a few weeks off in the spring when we plan to go to Disney World, and around Easter; and a couple weeks off in the summer.

Our first week (since public school) last week!
It was a great week! We got LOTS accomplished! Rachel's handwriting is starting to improve, and doing away with some bad writing habits she picked up at school. :) She started down a road to liking math again. :) She completed TWO lessons in her math book. Yay! We started her Book of the Centuries for History. She LOVES history because of it! Brandon's response to it, "Whatever makes history fun, right?!" She loves science. We completed 3 science lessons, the last one in the overview section, and started Digestive System and did 2 lessons there. On SATURDAY, she asked to work in "The Human Body!" lol I told her we don't do school on Saturday. . .I need a break too, plus Saturday was busy for us. I was glad to see she was so eager for it though! She doesn't like Language, Spelling and Handwriting though. (All the ones I hated in school, go figure!) But, she still does them. . .just complains about it. And she does well at least. So far, every test I've given her, whether math, spelling, or language. . .she's gotten 100% on all! Brandon was wondering if the stuff I'm giving her is too easy or something. Nope, it's more challenging than her public kindergarten classwork, she's learning it, then takes the test. Take spelling, she usually doesn't know 3 of her 8 words at the beginning of the week, but can get 100% by Friday after doing the activities and looking at the words enough and using them. And just as important, hardly any attitude in the evenings ALL week! :) Brandon and I have both noticed the difference. 8:30 catch the bus to 4:30 arrive home is WAY tooooooo long! There really needs to be a half day option for K! Or half day all together.
Michaela is doing well too. Still working on the pre-writing skills, and learning letter sounds. Let's see, off the top of my head, she knows the sounds for s, d, a, g, k, n, m, w, x, one sound for c (suh), l, almost there with u and q, j, and t. :)

Rachel's first day of full time home school since leaving public
Today was Rachel's first day of first grade (although she's been doing first grade work at home for months now)! And also our first day having her home since the end of public. All went well. :) She was excited, but the only thing is, she didn't want to do math. Evidently, she has decided math is not fun since the last track out! Ugh! From what I can gather from her, she was just bored with the same old writing numbers to 30 or 100 and counting over and over, and nothing else new really at school. I hope I can change her attitude on math. No evening attitude either! Imagine that?! She got to spend her day doing something interesting, got an afternoon rest (she won't nap for me anymore, but I do insist on a little down time, and it helps) to rejuvenate her energy and not get cranky at the end of the day. . . .we can have a pleasant evening family togetherness time without any snapping. . .homeschooling ROCKS! :)

It went so well!
I was nervous about getting resistance when it came time to take her out of public school. Taking Rachel out of school today went surprisingly well. Her teacher was sad to see her go since she just adores Rachel and she's "such a good kid," according to her. (I sure hope she had been good while at school!) But, she TOTALLY understood, especially since there's only 3 weeks left of school anyway! I was expecting some kind of resistance or hard feelings. Sounds like she'll still be getting a report card and everything! The office people were kinda sad too. She said, "Rachel's leaving!" and gave a little pout, but didn't give me a fight about it at all!
I would have taken her out on Monday, but she REALLY wanted me to come to the little Mother's Day party thing today. So, I left her in, went to the party, then took her out. Now, after the fact, a part of me actually feels a little sad for some reason, but we know this is best. I guess cause her teacher was so sweet! She just wasn't learning at her level, and we were fed up. That and Rachel doesn't work well being away from home from 8:30-4:30! That's too much for 5 year olds, if you ask me. Just about every evening, she'd be in an awful mood from too much of a long day. . . .long boring not learning much of anything new day!
I took her to Chick-fil-a afterwards for an ice cream to "celebrate her last day of public school." :)

Tomorrow is Rachel's last day!
Yep! Last day for her in public school! Sooooo exciting! Then, it's back to full time home school and learning at her pace. I wish I had never put her in there to begin with, but thought maybe it would be good for her this year. I THOUGHT that somehow she'd be able to learn more there than from me while having the new baby. I was soooo WRONG! I could have taught her more even with the birth and dealing with a new baby. . . . .Public school works for a lot of people, just doesn't fit into our life, and we'll be better off without it! I guess what we did get from it is that if times get tough in the future with homeschooling, then we KNOW the nightmare the alternative is.

Online Reading Assessment
So, today I found this site that tests a child's reading level. http://www.readingkey.com/athena/en/trialTest.php When she came home today, I did the test with her. She reads words on a 4th grade level! 4th grade in the 2nd month is where she can read words at correctly, and did better than 82% of other kids that took this test in the same grade and month as her. Past that, she doesn't get it and stumbles and butchers the words. I knew she was well above kindergarten, but sheesh! Brandon isn't surprised since she has read difficult words out of books before, and can read out of the Book of Mormon fairly well too. And at the 3rd quarter conference last early March, her teacher said she was close to getting into first grade level. Her teacher doesn't have a clue! Not to mention she "came into kindergarten not knowing how to sound out any words." Um, excuse me, but my child was sounding out three letter words since she was 3 years old!
Not sure what she reads at school, but for homework she has brought home these twaddle books that say nothing but, "My cat can. My cat can run.". . . .oh, please! She hates having to read those, but she has to also draw a picture about it and write three sentences, so she has to. How in the world can you draw and write about a "book" that has NO plot, and make it interesting? This week, she doesn't have to draw and write about the book she brought. . .just read it and talk to a parent about it. I think we'll skip the "baggie book" (that's what her teacher calls them, she sends them in a zip lock bag) this week! Especially since it looks like this Friday will be her last day of public before I transfer her back to homeschool anyway. We'll read a more challenging book instead! One with a plot!

Homeschool Field Day!
Today we went to our homeschool group's Field Day. And oh what fun we had! Looks like we'll be going ahead and just pulling Rachel out of school next week anyway (that's a whole 'nother post in itself!), so I kept her home today and took her to the Field Day too since she'll be missing out on the one at school at the end of May. It was held at a local park.

It's Official!
Well, sort of. . . .the school still doesn't know. lol But, after Brandon returned home last week, he finally said that we can go back to homeschooling for sure when Rach is out of public kinder. :) YAY! She doesn't know yet. We don't want her to go to school and say anything about it yet. . . . After June 3, I'll go into the school and take her out of their system so they're not expecting her to return on July 7. Rach is going to be soooooo happy when she finds out! 27 school days left to go!

Field Trip!
Today we went on a field trip to a Lowes Foods in Cary with the Stripling Homeschool Warriors group. I think most of the families in the group are in our Stake, with a few in other Stakes nearby, I believe. We had a tour of the grocery store/nutrition class. Walked through and talked about the produce, bakery, deli, and meat sections and discussed what you can get there and what foods are good for you. They got samples of some dried apple chips (Rachel didn't like those) and slices of Clementine oranges in the produce section. Both girls LOVED the Clementines! I guess something else to buy for them. :) Last I checked, they didn't like oranges. . . . . In the deli section, they got samples of sandwiches. . .wheat bread with turkey and cheese. . .I just took off the turkey for them of course. Rachel ate it, but said she didn't like the bread because it tasted like turkey. . . lol. I guess the bread took on a turkey taste! They also got cups of some kind of red punch with the sandwiches. In the meat/seafood section, the guy brought out a couple of live lobsters and put them on a little cart for the kids to see up close and touch. . . . .ewwww! Rachel quickly touched it, Michaela was having no part in it!
They also got to go in the back where only employees are allowed and got to go in the big freezer where they store the frozen foods. :) I think that was the big highlight for Rachel because she's been talking about the cold freezer all day! After that, we did a quick walk through the frozen foods section, and the kids had to mention things they liked that they saw. That was pretty much it. . .they got stickers and a coloring page at the end.

This past week
I'm going to try just summing up the week in one post rather than do a daily run down of what we do each day. :) Last Friday, Rachel finished up the Primer level math book. As of today, she's in the middle of lesson 2 of her Alpha (first grade) math book. Been reading lots of books this week, and working out of a couple first grade workbooks focusing on blends and beginning word sounds. She wrote in her writing journal one or two times. Did a cooking lesson for Home Ec on Monday. Worked on learning how to spell some words correctly, among other things but don't want to list them all and make this overview of the week too boring! Guess I'll just mention the highlights. She'll be going back to school on Monday. . . .such a sad time for both her and I. :( She isn't wanting to go back. Who can blame her though? School sucks! That's why we want to homeschool! Homeschooling does keep me busier, but it's a worthwhile busy. Especially if it means my child not being dumbed down and progressing through the levels at her own pace without being held back, and the big one. . . wasting her time! Hopefully the next 9 weeks flies by!
With Michaela, still working on the basics, letter sounds, getting her comfortable with writing with a pencil so we can begin learning how to write the letters and numbers. :) Rachel had a workbook at her age that had her just tracing basic lines going in different directions and swirls. I need to find another one like that for her! I think that may help. . .at least worth a try! Something else to be on the look out for while at the stores.

Getting closer to starting that new math book!
She did 4 pages in math today! Three more and we graduate to Alpha! We continued reading in the Amelia Bedelia book. Did some workbook pages from a beginning first grade workbook, and did quite well actually! Guess I should just save all the undone pages from the Kinder workbooks for Michaela. They're too easy for Rach. We also went over a few words she misspelled in her previous writing assignments. I had her study them, write them over and over, and then quizzed her on them.
Michaela did alphabet flash cards with Rach again this am while I nursed. I also attempted to see if she could trace a line to see if she's ready to start learning to trace/write letters. She could kind of do it. . .needs a little more time and/or practice. She was more interested in scribbling on the page!

Short day
Just some math, writing in Rachel's journal, and reading today since I went to the store, and that took up some time. Rachel also did flash cards with Michaela again. They just love that! Their idea this time! Oh, and her next math book arrived today! Once again, arrives the day after ordering. . . . :) She can't wait to start in it. Just one lesson to go! The new book has more problems per page, and gets more into addition and subtraction. 30 lessons again.

Starting to get back in the swing of things
Not much going on the past few days with the trip and all, but that's to be expected. We were in the car yesterday, so nothing really got accomplished. Today we got back to work. :)
Rachel started out the day helping Michaela with alphabet flash cards. Michaela would tell her the letter, and then Rachel would introduce the sound it makes. She hasn't had much exposure yet to the letter sounds, just the names. Normally, I'd do the cards with her, but I thought that would be a fun thing for Rach to do. Rach got to play teacher and strengthen her own knowledge of letter sounds, and it kept both of them busy while I fed Alyssa!
For math, she finished lesson 28 that she started at Grandma's; and started lesson 29: introduction to subtraction. She's done about 2-3 pages in that lesson. She caught onto subtraction very quickly. :) There's 30 lessons in the book, so pretty much almost done! I ordered the next book today which is Alpha. I hope it comes soon!
For reading, we started reading Amelia Bedelia, Rocket Scientist? that Aunt Judy gave her for Easter. She was so excited to start reading it, so I let her choose that book as her reading assignment. It's long, so we're going to take a few days getting through it. It's above her level a bit, so we took turns reading, and I helped with the handful of "hard" words. At least this book has helped her start to recognize some newer, hard words.
Also read a chapter out of our History book.

Tuesday - Thrusday
Tuesday was kinda hectic with packing going on, so we only got a few workbook pages done with some reading from Lehi in the Wilderness. Wednesday we were driving ALL day! Today, she's been doing some sewing on grandma's sewing machine. :) Also, started the next lesson in math. This lesson combined the hour hand with the minute hand on the clock. She LOVES trying to tell time! I'm surprised at how good she's doing too. The clock has also helped her to get better at skip counting by 5's. She still struggles with the 2's. Brandon gave me the go ahead to order her next math book. I want to order it on Saturday so it doesn't arrive while I'm away. Last time I ordered from them, it arrived the next day! She also did some reading from a Madeline book my mom had laying around. I wanted to do more, but we tried to go to this place called "Kid's Planet" but it was closed, then went out to eat, to the grocery store, so there wasn't as much time today. Is there ever enough time while at grandma and grandpa's? :) |

Great day!
We had a late start today since we kind of slept in! Today Rachel started out with math. Finished a whole lesson in one day! Usually it takes two days for her to finish a lesson. Today was telling the hour on a clock, and addition review. I looked through her book, and she has three more lessons to go, and then it's onto the first grade math book! Haven't ordered it yet though. Brandon was all like, "So, when do we have to order that?" and "How much is the next book?"
Brandon took the day off today, so the girls then went out to play for a break while he worked in the yard, and I got some things done inside. I had Rachel come in and read Last One In Is a Rotten Egg! out loud to me while I made lunch. After lunch she had some computer time with Reader Rabbit while I got Michaela down for a nap.
Next was another science lesson, onto lesson two. . . .it was an overview of most of the systems in the body, talking about what each one does in general, and the main parts involved. I love that her book leaves out reproductive system since it's geared towards younger children. :) All the others are mentioned in it though, I believe, if I'm remembering all the systems and not forgetting one that may have been left out. One more lesson to go and we're done with the first unit, which is pretty much an overview of the whole text. The other units have more lessons in them. I'm planning on skipping two units and going right to the Digestive System unit next. We have a nutrition class at a grocery store with our homeschool group on the 28th. There's a lesson in that unit on nutrition. I thought it would be nice to have the trip coincide with our science studies. Then, we'll go back and cover the units we skip over. Luckily, the lessons don't have to go in order to make sense. Each unit is basically a more in depth look into one of the systems.
The last thing we did in our school day was I had her write a paragraph in her journal about her day today for writing. After she wrote, we analyzed it, I wrote under it what she was saying so that she'll be able to read it when she's older. lol Then, we talked about how she needs to put a space between her words so that it doesn't look like a jumbled mess of just letters running on together, so people can read it; and talked about how to spell the words she misspelled.
I plan to do some things with her tomorrow, but we'll be busy packing to go to Grandma and Grandpa's house and doing laundry, so not sure we'll do as much as usual.

Rachel had a half day today at her public school
So, I took full advantage when she came home! She read If You Take a Mouse to School to me as I folded a couple loads of laundry. Pretty much read it by herself, except for a few harder words that I helped her with. I'm impressed with her reading progress.
Then we worked on some math. With her in school from 8:30 when she catches the bus until the bus drops her off at home at 4:30, we just don't have the time to really supplement her education as I had hoped when I first put her in. So, her math has suffered since I haven't been keeping up with it, and she isn't learning in school what I had been teaching her last spring. She didn't know 4+4, and others today, which she had memorized before starting public school. She used to just rattle the answers off, but today I had her do the next page in her math book, and she just cried with frustration because she didn't know it. It's as if she's had a "summer vacation" and forgotten the material she used to know in June by the next September. So, I had her do the one page. Looks like we'll definitely be working on math this track out! Relearning addition facts! I seriously hate the fact she's in school! At least she's gotten better at reading, gotta give them that much! Other than her reading, her being in school has gotten her no where but behind. I want her out of there after kindergarten so bad. She also wants out, she hates school with a passion. She's excited when we do homeschool work here at home.
Also broke out our science book for the first time. We're starting with The Human Body text in the Life Science series. Rachel was sooooo excited about this book! She looked through it, and wanted to talk about the whole book right there! We did lesson 1, and talked about how God created life, and how we're in His image, and everyone is unique.
Tomorrow is the last day and then we track out for 3 weeks. I plan to have her continue practice her reading so hopefully she'll go back reading even better, work on her math, definitely doing science since she most likely won't let me forget about that one after today, continue writing in her little journal I got her for writing practice, and I'd like to re-introduce history. I want her to work on some sewing lessons as well. That's a rough idea of what I hope to accomplish, anyway!

Michaela's Preschool Progress as of 1-14-08
Last time I tested Kayla and wrote down what she knows was January 14th. At that time, she could recognize the letters: A, B, C, D, E, H, L, M, O, P, R, S, W, X, and Y. When shown 'G,' she didn't recognize it, but did say "grandpa." lol She knows all basic colors except for gray. She also knows quite a few numbers and shapes, but I haven't officially recorded which ones she knows yet. I'd say she knows most of them, from what I recollect off hand. We have since been working on all of these. I want to test her again soon and see if there's any progress. Things I'd like to start working on with her are the letter sounds, and maybe writing with a pencil. She can make great O's with a pencil! :)
